The Tracing of Relative Motion Using Rotated Frames.
depicted in prints and 3-D construction by artist David M White is the result of thirteen years work and is a step towards designing a drawing system for the representation of objects in motion.
Modern physics and mathematic have provided powerful tools for the scientist and
engineer, but many artists are still content to draw using a system of
construction designed 570 years ago: linear perspective. Perspective was
invented in 15th century Italy and as a method of preparatory drawing gives a
picture its illusion of reality. Though it has obvious advantages for the
applied arts, in fine art perspective can actually be a practical constraint.
In laying the foundation for the design of a drawing system for objects in relative motion, one constraint or set of rules is being substituted for another. But while perspective is both imaginative and practical, the system illustrated here lies to a far greater extent in the realm of the imagination, but for the practical reason that instead of sharing the motion of the objects or landscape we draw in linear perspective, in this system we do not share their motion.
